PROGRAMS and EDUCATION

HCCMidland and its arts programs exists to assist children in continuing their education beyond the school day, to help them fulfill their academic goals, and to promote community involvement. At HCCMidland, we teach students awareness of their own natural talent, and we nurture those abilities. Participation in after school arts programs encourages students to excel in their school environments. Enrollment is open to all children, though special recruitment targets Title I schools.

HCCMidland preserves the Hispanic culture through the arts. The arts are classified by the acronym ADDMS: art, dance, drama, music, and speech. Each of the arts must be taught and performed displaying a Hispanic artist, songwriter, playwright, or cultural tradition.
  • Art. Whether it is oil painting, crayons, or wall murals, students learn to explore and appreciate their own creativity as well as the creativity of those around them. Through hands-on instruction, art is brought to life before their eyes and with their own talents.
  • Dance. The art of dance gives students the opportunity to perform before live audiences and promotes the beauty and passion of Hispanic folklore.
    • Flamenco is a form of Spanish folk music and dance from the region of Andalusia in southern Spain. It includes cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), baile (dance) and Jaleo, which refers to the vocalizations and rhythmic sounds of palmas (handclapping) and pitos (finger snapping). Flamenco emphasizes local culture of Ballet with pointed toes and exaggerated movements.
    • Ballet Folklorico is characterized by footwork of percussive heel-stomping (known as zapateados), the use of colorful and elaborate costumes, and lively choreography. Folklorico includes dances from all regions of Mexico and highlights the variety of different cultures.
Students learn the history and choreography of each dance and are invited to perform in a variety of settings. We encourage the participation of all student ages and classify our dancers into three groups: beginners ages 5-9, intermediate ages 9-13, and advanced ages 13-18.
  • Drama. In drama, students are led through a step-by-step process of the world of theatrics. Students are introduced to Hispanic playwrights and adopt plays for live performance, and young thespians are introduced to the spotlight of backstage operations and play production.
  • Music. Through our Mariachi Program, students learn Hispanic sounds, upbeat tempos, instrumentation, harmony, movement of the fingers, teamwork, “gritos,” and vocals. Through Mariachi, students learn the history of their culture and ancestors.
The instructors teach with sheet music and provide specific instruction for each instrument. The program is also intended to help students gain the motivation and self-esteem to perform in front of thousands of people. The Mariachi Program is available to students in grades 5-12.
  • Speech. Students learn the art of oration and speech through theater, poems, and Declamación (a re-enactment or presentation given through theater, poetry, and art). Students also learn tips on how to make presentations in front of class and any size group, where they benefit from using effective presentational skills. Students may also learn the art of writing and performing poetry for the stage.

HCCMidland preserves the Hispanic culture through history. All dances, music, poems, and plays must have a history behind its origination—this history is read aloud at performances to inform the audience and so that the students will know the history behind their specific Art.

HCCMidland supports the community by providing educational assistance to students and intervening through tutoring programs at an early age.
  • HCCMidland students are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA in order to stay in the organization.
  •  Report cards are required to be turned in each time a report card is issued.
  • Probation. A Suspension system is used. The mandatory GPA requirement is so that we can assist the children with tutors for intervention.  Assisting a child with their education when they are young provides a better opportunity for development.
  • Tutors. Tutors are teachers from Elementary to Junior High levels. We also recruit students from Midland College’s Abell-Hanger scholarship recipients and are college students who are doing community hours as part of their stipulation of receiving a grant for their education.

HCCMidland supports the community by bringing tourism to the area through their performances and through workshops hosted by HCCMidland. Over the years, HCCMidland's Ballet Folklorico and Flamenco have hosted and/or performed at many Permian Basin events and community organizations including Ballet Folklorico and Flamenco classes, recitals, and performances; the annual Mariachi Workshop and Concert; the annual Diez y Seis Parade and activities; Midland County Library; Midland Chamber of Commerce; Celebration of the Arts; Septemberfest; the CAF AirSho; Fiesta West Texas in Odessa; Wild Wild West Fest (Andrews Chamber of Commerce); Chamber of Commerce events; Midland College events; Junior League of Midland events; I-20 Wildlife Preserve events; Yuletide at the Yucca; Church Jamicas; HEB’s Feast of Sharing; the Bilingual Educators Conference; and many other events.

Students also bring joy to their neighbors by performing at local adult care facilities and by performing for their schools at the Annual Cinco de Mayo celebration held at the Hispanic Cultural Center. The purpose in performing for their schools to build self-esteem among their peers, teachers, and administrative staff.

HCCMidland has been recognized in the State of Texas Tourism Guide, Midland Convention and Visitors Bureau website, Texas Meetings and Events Guide, Midland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s website, and has been published in Texaco’s Partners-in-Education poster.

We are dedicated to our students' success, and this is in part demonstrated by our partnership with the Midland County Library in hosting a program that addresses reading skills-- for both the parent and the child. We had our first workshop for parents on February 23, 2017 that gave parents the tools to help their child read at home.
